lazy days & java oats

15 Jan

Most nights, I go to sleep at midnight, after poring over food blogs and recipes. (Shout out to Namaste Gurl, whose blog I have read in its entirety, and whose food looks absolutely phenomenal day in and day out!)

Some nights, though… Some nights, I’m a “normal” college student.

So much love…

Most mornings, I wake up with a huge smile on my face ready to greet the day.
(Okay, maybe not, but close enough).

Some mornings, though… Some mornings, I awaken to a deep pounding in my skull like there’s some animal trying to get out.

So I just lay in bed. And all the exercise I do is a few curls with my roommate’s weights. Organization & productivity be damned.

Regardless, my morning is usually accompanied by coffee. And oatmeal.

So being the picture of efficiency that I am, I decided to combine both.

Java Oats

½ cup oats
½-1 packet instant coffee (maybe a tablespoon? Depends how strong you like it)
sweetener to taste (I used a packet of stevia!)
¼ tsp cinnamon, or to taste (seeing a theme? ;) )

Make oats as you would normally (for me, this means a microwave…) and add in your mix-ins! This would also be good with chocolate chips melted in… Mmm…

I have also added my favorite vanilla protein powder, for a “vanilla latte” type bowl.

While I would prefer pumpkin oats, I currently do not have access to pumpkin (well, I’m too cheap to buy it when I can get all of these ingredients with meal points on campus…). Plus, it just saves me from having to brew coffee ;)

What’s your favorite oatmeal flavor??! Alternatively, what do you like to do with your lazy days?

On my lazy days (like tomorrow!) I do.. well, nothing really. I’ll sleep in (or get up early), stay in my pajamas all day unless I workout, go grocery shopping, and then read, watch a movie, play on the computer or XBOX. Yup, I’m cool. :)

My absolute favorite oatmeal combo: chocolate chips and pb. Gah! So good!

CAN’T go wrong with pb!! ;)

and i love grocery shopping. it’s an addiction.
i’m terrible at comptuer/xbox games, but NO judgment on this end… I usually end up on food blogs for an inordinate amount of time… oops? ;)

    Your java oats look awesome!!
Just wondering, have you ever had an ED before??
I just noticed you pretty thin and don’t seem to eat too many fats! Idk, jw! Lol

I know many people who are naturally skinny i just did not know!

    • Nicole @ Of Cookies & Carrots January 15, 2011 at 3:44 pm #

I’ve flirted with an ED in the past, but that was a few years ago and I’ve been doing much better. I DO have a bit of a phobia of fats but I eat a lot more fat than it might appear some days on this blog!
I was also EXTREMELY stressed about school and other personal stuff last quarter, and as a result lost some weight I really didn’t need to/want to lose, so I’m not at my healthiest right now but it was less an eating disorder and more anxiety than anything.

I hope that helps… The LAST thing I would want to do is perpetuate any sort of eating disorder so if anything I’m writing or posting is in any way triggering do not hesitate to let me know, and if you want to talk about anything just shoot me an e-mail. :)

You basically just described me. Nice wording…I’ve never really known how to say, “Um yeah, at one point I almost had an eating disorder.” It’s amazingly horrible what stress can do to your body isn’t it?

      • snackgirlgoeshealthy January 16, 2011 at 10:24 pm #

No ma’m! Its not triggering at all! Honestly, ED’s are a tricky thing. And I think most girls do have “weight issues” It does not conclude that thet have an actual eating disorder.

and I totally understnad, unfortunatly I’m a stress eater. So stress = Carlee growing horizonatally! haha JK its not that bad but I AM a stress eater for sure!

Why do you have a fear of fats? Is it the calories or the actual fats? because fats actually are VERY good for you like PB, avocado, Olive oil, etc. Those are the ones I eat almost daily!
and calories make fat basically. I mean fats do HAVE higher calorie content though.

I am intrigued by the java oats!! I totally want to try this!

    • Nicole @ Of Cookies & Carrots January 15, 2011 at 8:10 pm #

See, I randomly decided to try it one day (I was out of ideas for what to put in my oats… and out of peanut butter haha) and thought I ws being SO clever. Then I read about someone else doing it on some other blog (unfortunately cannot remember which!) so apparently I’m not quiiiite as clever as originally thought ;)

It’s kind of good though! If you like coffee. Which I do. ;)

Lazy days for me include PJ’s, blankets, and blog reading!

My favorite oatmeal flavor would have to be pumpkin…I love anything pumpkin!

Oh, and totally a brilliant idea to combine the coffee and oats! Lazy girl’s dream breakfast!

My favorite oatmeal flavor = every oatmeal flavor :) Well, except for the turmeric oats I made the other day to help my sore back. Ya, I kind of had to choke those down (but they helped :)!

I love being able to sleep in and maybe doing some baking on lazy days.

Actually, I don’t like oatmeal too much. I think it’s a texture thing.

  10. Allison @ PickyEatingRD January 16, 2011 at 1:53 pm #

I am pretty simple when it comes to oatmeal. My fav is steel cut oats with a bit of brown sugar. On my lazy days I tend to try and sleep in as late as possible and usually spend them catching up on my fav shows!

    • Nicole @ Of Cookies & Carrots January 16, 2011 at 4:45 pm #

I have yet to try steel cut oats. I know, blasphemy! Must get on that… Unfortunately it’ll have to wait til I’m at home, with a stove.

This whole no-kitchen thing is SO frustrating sometimes ;)

Delicious!!!! Can’t wait to try that

Loving the java oats! I wonder how chai tea infused oats would taste.

    • Nicole @ Of Cookies & Carrots January 17, 2011 at 2:01 pm #

I once made oatmeal with leftover gingerbread spice tea and it was delicious… so I’d imagine that would be good as well! :)

This is brilliant! If I still drank coffee I would be all over this!
