on chocolate chip cookies

17 Jan

Way, way back when I started this blog, I told you I was looking for the perfect chocolate chip cookie recipe. Yes, so is everyone else. I mostly just love chocolate chip cookie dough and wanted an excuse to eat it. Full disclosure. ;)

So here is a less-than-picturesque post about two of my attempts at chocolate-chip cookie perfection… One done many moons ago when I was at home, and one just this past weekend.

First up: Jenna’s Chocolate Chip Cookies!

My brother has proclaimed these his favorite of the many recipes I’ve made. I thought they were a liiittle flatter than I would like (I like a kind of dense, chewy cookie) but they were summarily devoured anyways. And they do have the benefit of being an incredibly straight-forward recipe. No crazy flours or refrigerations required!

I found the recipe over at one of my FAVORITE blogs: Eat, Live, Run. Her love for life (and food) comes out in every single post and she inspires me on a daily basis. Go stalk her. ;)

I honestly made it exactly according to the recipe and I’m a lazy bum so I’m gonna let you hop on over there and peruse her site ;). Click here for the recipe!

The next one was another quintessential chocolate chip cookie recipe from Allrecipes. These are the ones I made just this weekend, in my friend’s apartment (hooray for having an oven!). I’m still pretty shy about my food-blogging habits, so I took an incredibly mediocre picture just for the sake of documentation:

I loved these, actually. They came together pretty easily, though I’m kind of sad about the fact that I just threw away the egg white… but these were delicious. My friends seemed to like them as well. I did put in some chopped-up Hershey’s Hugs at the request of my friend, and that turned out decently as well.

I actually made these with a combination of Guittard Semisweet and Milk Chocolate chips, and was surprised at how much I liked the milk chocolate chips. Usually I’m more of a dark-chocolate girl ;)

Wanna make these ones too? Head over here for the recipe! It’s super easy and really gets pretty good results :)

Well that’s it for this installment of Quest for the Chocolate Chip Cookie… If you’re looking for more, click here or here. I also have some other recipes I tried that I haven’t posted about… yet ;)

And here’s my friend’s yellow lab puppy. Who distracted me as I waited for cookies to bake. Just for good measure (and to make up for the atrocious photography in this post… I miss my DSLR. It’s coming to me this Thursday though!)

What’s YOUR go-to chocolate chip cookie recipe? (clearly I need more than the 300-some I have saved in my favorites…)

My favorite recipe has to be my dark chocolate cacao cookies (they are chocolate chip with a little twist!)

This is where I admit I rarely bake chocolate chip cookies because everyone already has their favorite chocolate chip cookie recipes, and I know it’s just one of those things you can’t compete with :P Usually I bring cookies to work, and my boss’s wife makes some pretty stellar choco chip cookies, so I just don’t “go there,” lol.
Both of these recipes look wonderful, though!

Haha so true! I’m horribly stubborn though and want to find “my” recipe. Or the one I like the best personally. Plus most of my taste-testers have been 13-year-old boys who just kind of love them regardless.

Next time you go on a cookie quest, can I join you? ;) I’ve only ever made the basic toll house cookie recipe on the back of the chocolate chip package, but I’m trying to come up with a healthier version. I think I just found my inspiration! :)

    • Nicole @ Of Cookies & Carrots January 18, 2011 at 6:04 pm #

I never had any luck with the tollhouse recipe for some reason. Maybe I jsut was expecting a different kind of cookie than it was, but mine always ended up SUPER flat.

But of COURSE you’re always welcome to join me ;)
I kind of want to try to make healthier ones in the long run, but for now it’s easier to obtain unhealthy ingredients (and easier to find peopel to foist them upon when they’re filled with buuuuttter)

Oh chocolate chip cookies…those used to be one of my favorites-but I was really more of a brownie lover :)

My fav cookie (i don’t know if you’ll like it because it is made with bitter chocolate..) Is a monster cookie. It has a bunch of nuts, coconut, bananas, oats, chocolate….ohhh man it is heavenly! And healthy!

    • Nicole @ Of Cookies & Carrots January 18, 2011 at 6:05 pm #

I haven’t tried bitter chocolate but I’m finding that now when I crave chocolate I DEFINITELY prefer dark chocolate. So, I think I coudl adapt to loving bitter chocolate ;)

Ooh, do you have a recipe somewhere for this monster cookie of yours?

Nothing wrong with just eating the dough if you ask me! To answer your question you left on my blog… in some cases companies come to me and ask if I’d do a review, other times I will email them, tell them about my blog and ask if I could try a sample to review :)

    • Nicole @ Of Cookies & Carrots January 18, 2011 at 6:03 pm #

Good to know, thank you so much! :) I kind of want to get on that whole sample bandwagon.

I adore your blog by the way. And am glad others support my dough eating habit. ;)

you make me wish i could bake! haha yum

    • Nicole @ Of Cookies & Carrots January 18, 2011 at 6:02 pm #

      I’ll bake for you! ;)
It’s an acquired “talent”. The first cake I baked was from a mix and I used olive oil because I didn’t know the difference (I mean, I was 8, and my mom said “vegetable” oil and as far as I was concerned olive oil was a variety of vegetable oil!). I have faith ;)

Those cookies look amazing! I’ve made Jenna’s cookies too and added walnuts for some awesome cookies. My best ones were some I made in Colorado using a high-altitude recipe, but I don’t know how to change it for being back at home now.

you know what, the taste is really the only important factor! So it’s not as “fluffy” or “dense” as you prefer – if it taste is rockin, then it’s a SUCCESS! : )

Thank your for reading my blog Nicole! I love yours! Oh my gosh – I so want to make Jenna’s cookies…I am in love with chocolate-chip cookies – who isn’t?! Wait, I don’t want to know -too much guilt!

So was this the best of the quest then? I’m going to check out those others one now.

    • Nicole @ Of Cookies & Carrots January 18, 2011 at 6:01 pm #

Aw thanks, I like yours too! :) I really think chocolate chip cookies are my favorite. Though chocolate-chocolate chip are delightful as well…. Okay I jsut love cookies what else is new ;)

I think my favorite thus far were the infamous NYT cookies, but I think a lot of it was that I used a more bitter chocolate chip that I really liked (in my “old age” I’ve become more of a dark chocolate fan ;) ) and I did like the sweet&salty combination. But I haven’t posted about those yet ;) haha.

In terms of easier to put together, straightforward recipes, I think my favorite was another I haven’t posted about yet that involved shortening, so it’s kind of a failure on the health standpoint (though I used one without hydrogenated oils). But for plain ole butter I’d say probably the second recipe in this post or the chewy!

Phew. That was a LOT to say about one kind of cookie. And I ain’t done yet ;) haha

ooo that looks yummyy! are the cookies more of a chewy? or a soft cookie?

    • Nicole @ Of Cookies & Carrots January 20, 2011 at 9:24 am #

I pretty much only make chewy ones (or ones that claim to be chewy). They’re not HARD and chewy though, they’re kind of soft-chewy, if that makes any sense?

It’s so funny that you just posted this, because last night my husband and I had another installment of our search for the perfect chocolate chip cookie. I like the results, but I want to make them 1 more time before sharing about them because we cooked them for a couple minutes too long.
